Darood Ibrahimi:

Darood Ibrahimi is a kind of prayer or blessing that we recite upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad  صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. it is widely recited among Muslims and is particularly significant part of Tashahud (sitting position in prayer).

Darood e Ibrahimi in Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Darood e Ibrahimi in Roman Urdu:

Allaahumma salli ‘alaa Muhammadin wa ‘alaa ‘aali Muhammadin, kamaa sallayta ‘alaa ‘Ibraaheema wa ‘alaa ‘aali ‘Ibraaheema, ‘innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allaahumma baarik ‘alaa Muhammadin wa ‘alaa ‘aali Muhammadin, kamaa baarakta ‘alaa ‘Ibraaheema wa ‘alaa ‘aali ‘Ibraaheema, ‘innaka Hameedun Majeed

Darood e Ibrahimi in English:

O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

Darood Ibrahimi with Urdu translation:

اے ہمارے اللہ! محمد اور آلِ محمد پر رحمت بھیج۔ جس طرح تو نے ابراہیم اور آلِ ابراہیم پر رحمت بھیجی ۔ بے شک تو تعریف کیا گیا پاک ہے۔

اے ہمارے اللہ! محمد اور آلِ محمد پر برکتیں بھیج۔ جس طرح تو نے ابراہیم اور آلِ ابراہیم پر برکتیں بھیجی تھیں۔ بے شک تو تعریف کیا گیا پاک ہے۔

Historical and religious significance:

Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila: Kab bin ‘Ujra met me and said, “Shall I give you a present? Once the Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and we said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ! We know how to greet you; but how to send ‘Salat’ upon you? He said, ‘Say: Allahumma Salli ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala `Ali Muhammadin, kama sal-laita ‘ala all Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala all Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala all Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6357

This hadith shows significance of Darood Ibrahimi as, Prophet Muhammad  صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ taught this durood to his companions. Reciting durood ibrahimi is obligatory during final tashahud of islamic prayers. This highlights its importance and the love Muslims are encouraged to express for prophet.

This durood is an expression of gratitude to Allah sending his guidance through Prophet and a means of drawing closer to Allah.

Virtues of reciting Darood:

  • Gaining Allah’s mercy and blessings: sending blessings on Prophet, a way to attract Allah”s mercy and blessings.
  • Fullfillment of a commandment: The Qur’an commands believers to send blessings upon the Prophet in Surah Al-Ahzab:

“Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O  believers! Invoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and salute him with worthy greetings of peace”.

  • Strengthening connection with Prophet: reciting Darood Sharif increases love for Prophet which is a fundamental aspect of faith.
  • Erasing sins and elevating status: Numerous Hadiths mention that sending blessings upon the Prophet erases sins and elevates one’s rank in the hereafter.

Practical tips for incorporating Darood in your daily life:

  • Include it in daily prayers.
  • Recite it on Fridays.
  • Make a target for example, to read this durood almost 100 times and try to recite more on daily basis.
  • Try to recite Darood Sharif in time of distress as scholar says that reading Durood in time of distress is a great practice as it opens doors of mercy.
